awesome sample work

Just wanted to take a minute and point out this amazing sample flip. I’d always been loving the production from METAL FINGERS pre-DOOM and i think this is one of ‘The Finest’ beats from KMD. The intro to Jody Watley’s amazing 80′s dance pop hit “Looking for a New Love” gets perfectly placed on “What a Nigga Know”. Originally planned for release in 1993, “Black Bastards” (KMD’s second and final album) got shelved by Elektra purportedly due to it’s racially controversial cover art. It was given a proper release in 2001, and now we can all have a listen to this early 90s gem.

I really don’t know why Jody Watley doesn’t have more sampled cuts, maybe they can’t get cleared? Her stuff has some amazing sounds to rearrange and lace a track with. Though a lot of her music is contrived and derivative, it still has some good production and probably worth digging into to pick up some sample fodder.

ghetto $lang + GOBI + dentstep djs

On Saturday Hailey’s is getting taken over by the scheming minds behind Ghetto $lang.  I remember meeting them a couple years back at J&Js, not sure if they remembered me – but they wanted to get something set up with their friends GOBI from austin and this night kinda fell together perfectly.

Ghetto $lang and GOBI perform a unique blend of electronica hip hop meets synth-pop and the result is pretty nice. In the same vein as locals Museum Creatures or Peopleodian, but with more driving rhythms and with more lyrical attacks. Anyhow – I think they’re real good dudes and for only $3, it should be a great show to attend right before school kicks off in Denton.

DJs EV-O and Killtron will join me in the booth to drop dubstep and bass jams to keep heads bobbin’ before and after the performances.

Doors at 9pm @ Hailey’s Club

GO RSVP

a new practical implementation of touchscreen djing

Pretty excited about this proof of concept i saw linked on Engadget today.

Aside from integrating the mixer controls into the touchscreen (some things must remain hardware – I believe), the only thing that really makes me cringe about the design is that the pitch adjustment is done entirely with bpm tapping, which are notoriously imprecise on touch screens, but it’s merely a concept design.  It’s simply fascinating to be around at this period of djing where this sort of tactile metaphor revolution is actively taking place. There is still a long way to go before anything like this sees a larger adoption rate – but it’s encouraging that others also see the potential in this technology.

Speaking of which – I’ll be doing an iPad + Serato set tonight @ hailey’s i think.

new weekly: Big Gulp

I’m kicking of a new weekly tonight @ hailey’s club in Denton TX. My friends from Technosports and Kashioboy will be joining me behind the booth to work out some tunes for the mundane mondays. Technosports have graciously hosted some of the best mixes from the most talented djs around the area, and now I’m going to return the favor. also, Kashioboy is going to be debuting his dj selections for the first time live, so come on out and show some support. we are going to go back to basics on this one – just good music and cheap drinks. don’t be afraid to request at tune!

It’s totally free to get in, doors @ 10pm.

yvonne fair – let your hair down (sampling timeline)

I was talking to my friend the other day about how diddy ruins a lot of classic beats and this one came up. I was surprised he’d never heard of the biz or fat joe tracks, so I decided to make this little post about one of my favorite beats. All of these tracks are great! (except for the diddy one…)

[1989] Biz Markie – Check It Out

The Clown Prince tutors kids on the importance of being punctual and listening to your principal and teachers.

[1993] Fat Joe – Bad Bad Man

Fat Joe goes in pretty ruthless on this. One of the better cuts from “Represent”.

[1997] Jay Z – Where I’m From

A slick production of the classic beat. a dope Brooklyn reppin’ track.

not even going to consider the diddy + rick ross joint. ruined the beat.

prince and omfg rave weekend

TONIGHT @ 80′s night im playing A LOT of Prince tunes. FREE.

On Friday, a new series of parties entitled “OMFG” starts up in Richardson of all places. Never played in Richardson before – but I’m happy to throw my support to the show because it seems to be pretty well handled by a dude named Harley. Ill be playing late late (like 1 i think) but you’d be a fool not to stick around early and catch a lot of talented notable and upcoming djs from the region.

I don’t remember how much it costs, but i think something like 7 or 10. y’know what all? the information should probably be here: FB EVENT / WEBSITE — anyhow, hope to see ya out in Richardson!

festival date added: Rock the Republic

Somewhere… someone saw the Republic not being rocked and told themselves “I must make a stand” and a year or so ago ROCK THE REPUBLIC was kicked off in Bryan Texas. With over 3,500 paid attendees the past year – 2009 can bear witness to the rocking of such a republic the likes of which South Texas had never seen. A few people took notice of the Rocking I was doing to some mini republics up here in North Texas and invited me down to help Rock their Republic.

If you want to see some republics rocked – go buy tickets here: RTR
